Most barbershops in Greater Sudbury start around $30 to $35 for a men’s haircut and $35 to $40 for a skin fade. A beard on its own runs about $20 to $30 depending on how much shaping it needs, and kids under twelve are almost always cheaper.
That is the short answer. The longer answer is the two words at the end of almost every price list in this city — “& up” — and what they mean for the number you actually hand over.
What sets the price
Time in the chair. This is most of it. A skin fade takes about fifty minutes because the blending genuinely takes that long — the work is in the two inches where skin turns into hair, and there is no way to rush it that does not show. A scissor cut on longer hair is quicker. A line-up is fifteen minutes and priced accordingly.
Whether a wash is included. Some shops charge it separately. It matters more than it sounds: hair cut dry hides the cowlick that shows up an hour later.
Whether the beard is part of it. Booked together, a cut and beard is usually cheaper than the two apart, and the sideburn actually lines up because both were judged against each other on the same day.
What “& up” actually means
Go and look at the price lists around Sudbury and you will notice the same thing almost everywhere. A haircut is “$30.50 & up”. A bald fade is “$35.50 & up”. A beard is “$21.50 & up”.
The “& up” is doing a lot of work. It means the number printed is the cheapest possible version, and something about your head — length, thickness, how long the blend takes, whether the beard also needs doing — may cost more. You will not find out which until you are in the chair, and you will not find out the final number until the till.
That is not dishonest. Every shop has a genuine spread of how long a cut takes. But it does mean the number you read when you chose the shop is not necessarily the number you pay.
The prices on this page have no “& up” on them. $35 is $35, whether the cut takes the full forty-five minutes or half of it. If something genuinely needs longer, you get told before it starts rather than after it finishes.
It is worth asking wherever you go. “Is that the price or is that the starting price” is a completely reasonable question and the answer tells you a lot.
Tipping in Sudbury
Fifteen to twenty percent is normal for a barber in Ontario, the same as a restaurant. On a $35 cut that is five to seven dollars. Nobody is going to say anything if you do not, and cash and card are both fine.
Getting more out of the same money
If you are on a three-week cycle with a fade, a line-up at week two keeps the edges sharp for $15 instead of paying for a full cut a week early. It does not fix a grown-out blend — nothing does except cutting it again — but it buys you a week, and over a year that is a few cuts’ worth of difference.
