Walk-in or book ahead in Sudbury?

Walk-ins work midweek mornings. Weekends and after-school they do not. When to just turn up and when booking is the only way to be sure.

Walk in midweek before noon and you will usually get a chair. Walk in on a Saturday, after four on a weekday, or the week before a holiday, and you probably will not. That is the whole thing, but the detail is worth having because a wasted trip across Sudbury in February is a genuinely annoying way to spend an afternoon.

When walking in works

Tuesday to Thursday, morning to early afternoon. These are the quiet hours in every barbershop in the country. If the chair is free you get cut, and often you get a more relaxed cut than you would in a packed shop.

A line-up almost any time. Fifteen minutes fits into gaps that a full cut does not. It is the one thing on the list that can often be squeezed in.

When it does not

Saturdays. The busiest day by a distance, and everyone else has worked that out too.

After 4pm on a weekday. School and work finish, and the last two hours of a weekday are as busy as a Saturday morning.

The week before Christmas, and before any long weekend. Every barbershop in Greater Sudbury is booked solid and the walk-in queue is an hour deep.

Anything that takes the chair for a long stretch. A hot towel shave is forty minutes and a cut and beard is seventy. Neither can be slotted between two appointments. If you want one of those, book it — turning up and hoping will not work.

Why the honest answer is “it depends on the chair”

A barber with a booked appointment at 2:15 cannot start a fifty-minute fade at 1:50, even if the shop looks empty when you walk in. The chair being visibly free is not the same as the chair being free.

That is why a shop that says “walk-ins welcome” is not promising you a haircut. It is promising not to turn you away if there is room.

The two-minute version

Message or call before you set off. Not to book — just to ask if there is room in the next hour. That is thirty seconds and it saves the drive.

If you want certainty, book a time. You pick the slot, you get a confirmation, and there is no queue.

What to do if you are turned away

Ask when the next gap is and take it. It is usually sooner than you would guess, and it is always sooner than coming back tomorrow and rolling the dice again.
